Our life has been split into two periods: prior to and during the pandemic. The pandemic and financial crisis have affected all areas of life, including the book industry which is suffering huge losses all over the world. Only e-books and wholesale purchases by delivery businesses have saved this sector.

Before the pandemic, 2019 saw a positive trend of growth in the Russian book industry that had arisen over the previous two to three years. The book publishing crisis of the mid-2010s, which was characterized by a decline in the number of titles produced and a fall in print runs, was left in the past and the industry entered a long-awaited state of stability and optimism. The Russian book industry’s total turnover in 2019 (counting both printed and e-books) increased by almost 5.3% from 2018.

But the coronavirus has changed things. What is the situation like now in Russia? What plans and prospects await on the horizon?

Literary Awards: A Guide for the Reading Community

Every year in Russia, about 100,000 new books are published and dozens of previously unknown authors emerge. How can one know what to read? This is where literary awards can be of some help. Admittedly, it is impossible to choose a book with which everyone will unanimously agree. Therefore, we should think of literary awards as a sort of spotlight scanning the vast expanse of literature and illuminating individual names and work from out of gloom.

As part of our program, we are therefore happy to present three Russian literary awards that might be of interest to Korean publishers and translators, and perhaps even to young Russian authors living in Korea.

The Read Russia Prize

The Read Russia Prize is awarded for the best translation of a Russian literary work into a foreign language. It was founded by the Institute for Literary Translation in 2011 and is granted every two years. It is bestowed upon a translator (or group of translators) for the best translation of Russian prose or poetry published by a foreign publishing house in the last two years.

The “Lycée” Pushkin Prize for Young Russian Writers and Poets (in partnership with Lotte Corporation).
