Tatyana Tolstaya
Tolstaya is a Russian writer, philologist, publicist, teacher, TV presenter, journalist, and literary critic.
She was born in Saint-Petersburg, but currently lives in Moscow.
She graduated from Saint Petersburg State University’s Department of Classical Philology with a degree in Latin and Greek.
She has been active as a writer from 1983 to present.
Her debut short story, On the Golden Porch, was warmly received by readers and critics alike, and was declared one of the best literary debuts of the 1980s.
In 1990, the author departed for the USA where she performed teaching activities. Tolstaya taught Russian literature, worked with The New York Review of Books, The New Yorker, TLS and other magazines, as well as giving lectures at various universities.
In 1991, she began to work in journalism and continued to write books. In 1999, Tatyana Tolstaya returned to Russia, where she continued to work in literature, publicity, and teaching.
In 2000, the author published her first novel, The Slynx. The book attracted much critical response and became very popular in Russia. Many theatres staged plays based on the novel, and it was even adapted into a literary series.
Tatyana Tolstaya is a laureate of many Russian and international literature and television prizes.
Her books have been translated into English, German, French, and Swedish to name but a few.

레닌그라드(현재 상트페테르부르크)에서 태어나, 현재에는 모스크바에서 산다. 레닌 그라드 국립대학교(현재 상트페테르부르크 국립대학교) 고전어문학부에서 라틴어와 희랍어를 전공했으며, 1983년에 등단하여 현재까지 활동 중이다. 등단작인 단편 소설 「황금 현관 계단에 앉아서...」는 평단과 독자들의 뜨거운 호평을 받았으며, 80년대 최고의 데뷔작 중 하나로 손꼽힌다.
1990년 도미(渡美) 후, 여러 대학에서 러시아 문학 강의를 했으며, 서평지 『뉴욕 리뷰 오브 북스』, 『뉴요커』 잡지, 『TLS(Times Literary Supplement)』 등 유수의 잡지사와 협업을 했다. 1991년 본격적으로 기자 생활을 하면서 집필 활동도 했다.
1999년 러시아로 돌아온 후에도 문학, 출판, 교육 분야 등에서 다양한 활동을 멈추지 않았고, 2000년 첫 번째 장편 소설 『키시』를 출간했다. 이 작품은 적지 않은 반향을 일으키며, 러시아에서 큰 인기를 얻었다. 소설을 원작으로 다양한 공연과 연극이 무대에 올라갔고, 드라마로도 제작되었다.
타티야나 톨스타야는 러시아는 물론이고, 국제 규모의 문학상과 방송상을 다수 받았고, 그의 책은 영어, 독일어, 프랑스어, 스웨덴어 등 다양한 언어로 번역되어 세계의 독자들을 만나고 있다.
